Correction: In our Tee Tips column that ran in the summer issue of Welcome to SoCal Magazine, we wrote that Tom Watson chipped in to save par on the 17th hole at Pebble Beach during the 1982 U.S. Open. Tom Watson chipped in to make birdie and went on to win the tournament.

OK, golfers - Here’s a little quiz to test your knowledge of golf history. Who chipped in from the thick rough to make birdie on the par 3, 17th hole at the 1982 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach… and, went on to win? How about this one – Who, at the 2005 Masters on the par 3, 16th, hit a magnificent, knock down wedge that skipped across the green, paused on the top of the slope, trickled down to the hole, hung on the lip and fell in. If you play golf, you know the answers are Tom Watson and Tiger Woods respectively. OK, you’re on a roll, but they were easy. I’ll make these next two a little bit harder… Ready?

During the 2006 Match Play Championship at La Costa, who stood on the sixth tee staring down a 309 drive, 302 of which were required to reach the front edge of the green, but only if you can clear the 60 foot trees in the process? He was all-square with Charles Howell and needed to go for the green in one, a risky shot to be sure. He hit it 308 yards, barley clearing the trees and landed hole high, but 75 yards right of the green. He chipped on to save par, halved the hole and ultimately won the match?

Try another? – Who offered Lee Trevino a “little advice” during the 1980 Tournament of Champions in violation of rule 81a. “You’re playing the ball too far forward,” Lee’s playing partner commented. Unbeknownst to him, Trevino’s caddie was wearing a television microphone. His swing tip was inadvertently broadcast live on the air. A viewer promptly recognized the slip and called in to report the infraction. A two shot penalty was assessed. Unaware of the assessed penalty, and apparently the TV mike, he went on to win the championship by three strokes. The answers? Phil. Michelson and Tom Watson.

PGA. The first eight of such granite monuments are installed on the North Course at holes 1, 2, 13, 16 and 18 and on the South Course at holes 11, 13, and 15. The remaining holes will be installed in 2008.  Each monument contains interesting facts that occurred on that particular hole dating back as far as 1969. Guests have the opportunity to “walk in the footsteps of legends.” “It’s both our duty and pleasure to remind golfers who play at La Costa today about the personal connection they have to the tradition and history made by many of the best players in the world.” states April Shute, General Manager of La Costa.

La Costa Resort and Spa has been spoiling the who’s who of Hollywood and the golf world since 1960. Today, La Costa is a family friendly resort boasting $100 million dollars in improvements and renovations since 2001. The centerpiece of which is the 43,000 square foot Spanish Colonial style spa where guests are spoiled with the latest European spa treatments guaranteed to make you feel like royalty. While you’re melting away life’s kinks, the kids can romp in the all new Kid’s Club and LC Vibe Teen Lounge. All supervised, kids and teens can swim, slide down a twisting pool slide, participate in arts and crafts, take nature walks, watch movies and play games. La Costa has taken great care in the design of the Kid’s Club and is actively marketing the resort to families with children. So load up the kids and golf clubs, and treat yourself to a great family weekend of relaxation, the Legends Trail, and hopefully a few birdies on La Costa’s historic golf course.

La Costa has many recreational opportunities nearby, including beaches, biking, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hot air ballooning, and water sports.
